US$6.4 billion invested into construction sector

The construction sector in Cambodia continues to grow according to a report by the Ministry of Land Management Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC) which shows an increase in investment of more than 34% year-on-year to more than US$6 billion.

The recently released data reveals that between January -September this year, the ministry approved 3,433 construction projects valued at more than US$6.4 billion. The figure shows an increase of 34.73% compared to the 2,541 projects valued at US$4.8 billion approved during the same period last year.

The figure brings the total number of approved construction projects to 46,991 valued at US$48.17 billion over a period of 19 years (2000 to 2019).

Over the 9-month reporting period this year, the sector has created between 147, 450 and 150,000 jobs daily while in 2018, the sector provided between 200,000 to 220 000 jobs daily, a drop of about 31.81% year-on-year.

Based on a field survey conducted by ministry officials, unskilled construction workers earn between 30,000 and 40,000 riels per day while skilled workers earn between 40,000 and 60,000 riels. Engineers, architects and other skilled workers can earn between US$400 and US$2,500 per month.
