Three Zones in Siem Reap Province Chosen for ‘Smart City’ Project

Three zones in Siem Reap province including the city zone, historical heritage zone and Tonle Sap zone, have been preliminarily chosen as part of the Cambodia-Japan joint ‘Siem Reap Smart City’ project, according to the progress meeting between the provincial administration and JICA on 24 February.

Siem Reap Deputy Governor Ly Samrith said in the meeting that the three selected areas will be developed into sustainable zones, with inclusive urban development plans such as upgrading the security system, transportation, waste management, among others.

He added the timeline of the project is set for 2020 to 2031, and with the help from JICA, all city issues will be solved using modern technology, data analysis, and optimization methods or known as the smart city tools.

Although Siem Reap is currently under pressure from the decline of tourism caused by the pandemic, the Cambodian government continues to develop more infrastructure in the province.

Those ongoing projects include a 38-road renovation project, a river sidewalk improvement project, a sewage improvement project, and especially the new US$900-million Siem Reap International Airport project. (Read more and more)
