Phnom Penh to have priority bus lane by October

Phnom Penh Municipality has recently announced its plan to launch a priority public bus lane on Monivong Boulevard in October, with the aim of reducing traffic congestion as well as to improve the city’s infrastructure system.

The announcement was made on 17 January during a meeting between Phnom Penh Governor H.E Khoung Sreng, together with representatives of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

According to Phnom Penh Municipality spokesman Met Meas Pheakdey in an interview with RFI, the lane will start from Central Market to Stung Meanchey. The project is currently underway and is expected to be finished by September or October this year.

The municipality has yet to announce the exact budget to implement the project since the designated team is still studying the feasibility of other extra add-ons to the project such as traffic lights, stop areas, as well as other technical works.

Mr Met added that this bus lane is a pilot project. If it is successfully implemented, the municipality will build more on several other main roads.

Since the first introduction of the bus system in 2014, Phnom Penh city currently has a total of 13 public bus lines and more than 200 vehicles running every day, with an average of 30,000 passengers per year.
