US$300 million Sihanoukville road building program to break ground

Ground will be broken by Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia on Saturday 16 November for work on the 34-road construction program in Sihanoukville city with a budget of almost US$300 million.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a cement factory in Kampot province on Thursday 15 November, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said the roads in Sihanoukville city will be built of 20cm-high cement concrete covered by rubberised asphalt to ensure they are fit for heavy transportation in the province which sees busy container truck traffic.

“We have to build roads that are able to support of heavy weight trucks made abroad,” Samdech Techo Hun Sen said, citing that cases of road damage in Preah Sihanoukville province were caused by allowing heavy trucks and container trucks enter and exit the deep seaport as well trucks loaded with building materials.

The Cambodian government has decided to prioritise quality infrastructure development in its strategic plan to ensure infrastructure projects are stronger and have longer life usage.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen said that before US$100 million could be used to build 200km of road but in the new strategic plan, a budget of US$100 million can now only be used to build 100km of road to ensure the quality.
