Hydro Power Lower Sesan II Dam Inaugurated

On 17 December, 2018, the Hydro Power Lower Sesan II dam was inaugurated,presided over by SamdechTecho Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia.

The Hydro Power Lower Sesan II, which is located in Stung Treng Province, has the capacity to produce electricity of up to 400 megawatts. The project was built under a joint venture between three companies with a total investment of US$800 million.

The companies engaged in the joint venture include Hydrolancang International Energy of China which holds a 51% share, the Royal Group of NeakOknha Kith Meng which holds a 39% share while Vietnam firm Vietnam’s Electricity (EVN) holds a 10% share.

The investment projects was built under a ‘build-operate-transfer (BOT)’ structure for a 45-year concession period.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, SamdechTecho Hun Sen said that the Hydro Power Lower Sesan II dam will provide many jobs as well as generate additional tax revenues.

In addition, this hydropower facility will increase the level of independence and security of Cambodia’s electricity supply, which will contribute to promoting national economic development and reducing poverty.

Prime Minister SamdechTecho Hun Sen also pointed out ‘our policy is not to increase electricity price but to study to decrease electricity price’.
