The Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MPWT) has said that the feasibility study on a monorail and metro in Phnom Penh is being conducted, citing that the study will lead to options for the government in developing the city’s transport sector to ease traffic congestion.

Speaking at a meeting on road safety at the Ministry of Interior held on 09 April, H.E Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of MPWT said that the feasibility study will generate results on which the government can make a decision as to which project is the best with a proper cost to improve the transport system in the city.

The feasibility study on a monorail and metro is being conducted by expert officials from China, H.E Chanthol said, citing that the results of the study will be compared to the automated gateway transit (AGT) study that Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) conducted and has now finished.

“It’s time for Phnom Penh to be conducting a comprehensive study on whether transport is via city bus, via AGT, or monorail, or metro,” H.E Chanthol said.

“The special working group from China has arrived in Phnom Penh. A monorail creates less noise, using rubber types, and [it is proper] due to our paths being small and having residencies nearby. If we use AGT, it makes a loud noise, so a monorail may be cheaper than AGT,” H.E Chanthol said. “A metro comes at a high cost, but it is a better look than monorail.”

“The study on the AGT by JICA has been finished, but we have to compare between AGT and monorail and metro, which one is efficient with the proper cost,” he said.

The monorail project for Phnom Penh was unveiled when H.E Chanthol led the Public Work Ministry’s delegation to China in late March.
