Construction on the new Siem Reap International Airport will take place after the 29 July election, according to state-run news agency Agence Kampuchea Presse.

On 13 July, Siem Reap Governor H.E. Khim Bunsong met with representatives from Angkor International Airport Investment (Cambodia) Co., Ltd, the company contracted to build the new airport, to discuss detailed plans for the construction.

Speaking during the meeting, Mr. Zou Yuhui Deputy Managing Director of Angkor International Airport Investment (Cambodia) Co., Ltd, said that the company will launch the official groundbreaking ceremony for the construction after the general election, noting that the company had already made progress on the construction site.

Using an investment capital of US$900 million, the new Siem Reap International Airport will be constructed on a 700-hectare plot and also include 1,000 hectares in a special economic zone. Construction is expected to be finished in 3 to 5 years, he said.

In addition, as part of the company’s master plan, it will also focus on irrigation systems, reservoirs, a flood prevention system, and the adequate supply of water for the airport upon completion, he added.

Meanwhile, in order to ensure the safety of the new airport, Mr. Zou Yuhui has asked Siem Reap authorities not to build high-rise buildings or tall lampposts. Moreover, he also requested the master plan for provincial development from H.E. Khim Bunsong.

Angkor International Airport Investment (Cambodia) Co., Ltd, which operates under the Chinese state-run Yunnan Investment Holdings Ltd (YIHL), signed the agreement to construct the new Siem Reap International Airport with the Royal Government of Cambodia in 2017 with a 55- year concession under a build-operate-transfer (BOT) scheme.
