Cambodia Probing Angkor Wat Replica in Thailand

The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts has requested the Cambodian Consulate in Thailand to thoroughly investigate the construction of a temple in Thailand, which internet users claimed has copied the architectural style of Angkor Wat.

According to social media, the Angkor Wat-like temple project named Sihanakhon is currently being built in Buriram province, about 300 kilometres from Bangkok.

The news has attracted a lot of attention from Cambodian internet users who have requested the relevant authorities to take action.

In response, the Minister of Culture and Fine Arts Phoeurng Sackona has already requested the Cambodian consulate there to investigate the case in detail.

HE Phoeurng Sackona also urged that while waiting for the investigation, internet users should remain calm and wait for the truth.

In October last year, there was a similar case. The Le Palais Hotel on the island of Phangan, Thailand used the architectural style of Angkor Wat to decorate their façade, causing anger among the public. (Read more)

The hotel owner later issued a letter of apology, explaining that the construction was made to appreciate Angkorian art, not to copy it.
