400-Megawatt Power Plants in Lvea Em District Start Turbines

The US$380-million 400-megawatt fuel-fired power plants in Lvea Em have started power generation and been linked to the national grid since earlier this year, according to the spokesman of Ministry of Mines and Energy HE Victor Jona on 12 January.

HE Victor Jona said the operation is in response to the high demand in the dry season and is part of the government’s attempt to diversify electricity sources.

“We have already thought carefully over the demand and supply before operating this plant. Another reason is that we want to diversity the power sources as much as possible such as coal-fired power plants, dam, solar, and so on,” said HE Victor Jona.

“However, we do not run the full 400-megawatt capacity due to the limited demand at the moment. The fuel-fired power plants are costly, so we use them a lot when the demand is very high,” he added.

The power plant is built on a total area of 43 hectares, with an investment of US$380 million. The plant consists of two generators; a 200MW generator from Finland (built by China Gezhouba Group Corporation), and a 200MW generator from Germany (built by China National Heavy Machinery Corporation).
